Comments: Original spelling hulophaga Elliot, 1899, corrected to hylophaga by Elliot (1905). Formerly included in carolinensis, but separated as a distinct species by George et al. (1982). Karyotype 2n = 52, FN = 64-66 (Zima et al., 1998). Molecular data suggest that this is the basal taxon of the genus (Brandt and Ortí, 2002)
