Chaetoceros okamurai: Comments
Comment:
It may be questionable to be an accepted name. Van Landingham treated it as a synonym of Ch. peruvianus Brightwell. However, Hernández-Becerril (1998) recorded Ch. okamurai from the Gulf of Mexico. But one of the characteristic features he described for this species, 'twisted chains', was not mentioned in the original description by Ikari (1928). In addition, the characteristic of numerous girdle bands or 'costations on the girdle' in some specimens described in the original publication was not observed by Hernández-Becerril. Therefore, Ch. okamurai recorded from the Gulf of Mexico, although distinct enough to be separated from similar taxa in the same region, it remains uncertain whether it is the true Ch. okamurai as originally described by Ikari from Japanese Pacific waters.
