Page et al. (2013:203) does not recognize this now-extinct taxon as there are no specimens available to collect genetic or protein samples for analysis. Robins et al. (1991) agreed with Miller and Smith (1981) that Chasmistes fecundus was a hybrid between Catostomus ardens and Chasmistes liorus
