Woods & Kilpatrick (2005) mention published suggestions that "Molina's (1782) Mus laniger was a composite based on no known specimens," and that Bennett's (1829) use of Chinchilla lanigera, although derived from Molina's Mus laniger, made the name available there in its own right. Modern uses of Molina's name will generally correspond to the current use of Bennett's name
