Turgeon et al. (1998) note that D. L. N. Vink (1991, La Conchiglia No. 261:10-21) 'concluded that Conus sticticus A. Adams, 1854, is an earlier name with priority over C. stearnsii but chose not to replace the "well-entrenched" junior name with its unused senior synonym. Given the recent ICZN action regarding C. anabathrum (q.v.) and C. floridanus, such preference may prove futile.'
