Comment:
The status of Cryptops australis kraepelini Attems, 1928 is unclear. It was on coined on p.85 in what appears to be a global key, as [Cryptops] 'australis var. kraepelini Att.' with footnote stating 'Kraepelin, 1908, Fauna S.W. Australia, p. 106, records a Cryptops australis. This seems to be a variety of the first-described form, and I have called it variety kraepelini.' This suggests Attems was applying the variety name to what Kraepelin found in Australia, not claiming it is an African variety, although it is not completely clear. No type locality is given in ChiloBase 2.0. Lewis (2013:6-11) places Kraepelins's (1908:106) usage in synonymy under C. australis, while noting Attems' (1928:89) use of the species name C. australis is not part of that species, and he coins the new name C. capensis for it, along with elevating C. australis africanus to full species status. It is not clear what should become of the name C. australis kraepelini Attems, 1928
