Originally described as Nais furcata by Müller (1773, p. 23), this species then was associated with several different published names, discriptions before being established as Aulophorus furcatus by Michaelsen (1905, p. 308); this species was placed in the genus Dero when the genus Aulophorus Schmarda (1861) was relegated to subgeneric status by Sperber (1948, p. 158-) when she attempted to provide clarity and organization of the confusing history of this genus throughout the literature, and in particular, the divisions of described and rediscribed taxa in this genus, and their assignments to the subgenera Dero (Dero), Dero (Allodero), and Dero (Aulophorus)
