Originally described as Aulophorus pectinatus by Stephenson (1931), this species was later renamed as Dero intermedia by Loden and Harman (1982) because - after Sperber (1948) relegated the genus Aulophorus to subgeneric status - the combination of species in these two genera, Aulophorus and Dero, resulted in two species with the same epithet: Aulophorus pectinatus and Dero pectinata; however, Brinkhurst and Wetzel (1984, p. 33) noted that Loden and Harman failed to notice that the specific epithet, intermedius, also was preoccupied - as Dero intermedius Cragin, 1887), and that Harman planned to rename this taxon, again; however (with no further explanation), Brinkhurst (1986, p. 83; p. 253) renamed this taxon as Dero lodeni
