It appears there may be an unresolved homonymy involving Gomphonema gracile var. cymbelloides Grunow ms. in Cleve, 1894 and Gomphonema cymbelloides Frenguelli and Orlando, 1960. Both are regarded as accepted in Van Landingham (1971). The former is listed as an accepted species in Stoermer et al. (1999)
