Comments: Subgenus Proeulagus (Gureev, 1964), or Macrotolagus (Averianov, 1998). Includes gaillardi and mexicanus; see Anderson and Gaunt (1962) and Hall (1981:328-330); but see also Gureev (1964:192, 195). Range allopatric with L. alleni, to which it is probably related. Karyotype reported by Gonzalez and Cervantes (1996). Reviewed by Best and Henry (1993b, Mammalian Species, 442)
