Lucigadus vittatus: Comments
Comment:
Lucigadus vittatus was originally described as Macrurus vittatus, however, the status of this name is not clear. According to Eschmeyer (online Catalog of Fishes, 2005), "However, in the original description Weber used two names: M. fasciatus (pasted over with vittatus on p. 157) and vittatus on Pl. 1 (fig. 5) and on p. 618; the name fasciatus was used in the index (p. 685, 694). The original on p. 157 at the California Academy of Sciences has strip with vittatus typewritten in the same style as the genus and glued over fasciatus on p. 157. Gilbert & Hubbs 1920:559 [ref. 1638] used M. vittatus without mention of fasciatus. Weber & de Beaufort 1929 [ref. 16063] mentioned both species and state (unfortunately) that vittatus is a misprint; technically they serve as first revisers selecting fasciatus over vittatus. This means that Macrurus fasciatus Weber 1913 is preoccupied and is objectively invalid"
