Comments: Usually listed as a subspecies of M. surifer (Chasen, 1940), but treated as a species by Musser et al. (1979) and retained as such by Corbet and Hill (1992). Closest phylogenetic relative is probably M. surifer. Part of the rodent fauna endemic to Mentawai Arch. (see account of Leopoldamys siporanus)
