Although listed as "status uncertain" by Eschmeyer (online Catalog of Fishes, 2003), on the advice of Dr. Ian Harrison (personal communication, June 2003), ITIS is listing Mugil longicauda Guitart Manday & Alvarez-Lajonchere 1976 as valid, and including it as incertae cedis in Mugil. Dr. Harrison suggests that it might be synonymous with M. curema (with which it is at least very similar), or conspecific with material that is identified as Mugil gaimardianus (a supressed name) by some researchers
