Once ranked as a subspecies of N. lepida, from which several data sources support its specific-level divergence (Koop et al., 1985; Mascarello, 1978; Patton and Alvarez-Castañeda, 2005). But see Hoffmeister (1986), who disputed the specific status of devia based on his interpretation of morphological integration among Arizona populations.
