Comments: Includes clarkei and marica; see Ellerman and Morrison-Scott (1966:460-461). This species was described in greater detail by Schlegel and Müller, in Temminck, Verh. Nat. Gesch. Nederland. Overz. Bezitt., Zool., Mammalia, pp. 107, 112 [1845]. Corbet and Hill (1992) considered caniceps from Nepal, Sikkim, N Burma, and W China, and sybilla from a few localities in Burma and W China, as distinct species, sympatric with elegans in W Yunnan (China)
