Concerning North American records that are referrable to another species, Pelham (2008:428) notes of Piruna microsticta (Godman, 1900) "Reports of this extralimital species from Texas refer to Piruna penaea (Dyar, 1918); see Opler and A. Warren (2002)"

ITIS has not looked into the gender disagreement between Pelham's use of "Piruna microsticta" versus other sources using "Piruna microstictus," although Pelham (2008) indicates he follows only the orthography of the name as originally published
