The taxon Pristina longiseta Ehrenberg, 1828, has long been recognized as one of the most common aquatic oligochaetes in the world; it has been determined to be cosmopolitan, and had had several subspecies erected, most commonly coinciding with distribution. Harman and McMahan (1975) reevaluated this taxon, its subspecies, and summarized the history of synonomies (valid and invalid) associated with its name, and with Pristina leidyi
