Originally described in the genus Stylaria by Schmidt (1847, p. 320), the species was later assigned to several subsequent genera (Nais, Pterostylarides, and Stylaria again) prior to being assigned to / as the type species for the new genus, Ripistes, established by Dujardin (1842, p. 93)
