Hershkovitz (1966c) viewed Scapteromys as the cognate of Kunsia­, a close kinship supported by phylogenetic investigations of gene-sequence data, but not including Bibimys as third member of a scapteromyine tribe sensu Massoia (1979b, 1980a) (see D'Elía, 2003; D'Elía et al. 2003; Smith and Patton, 1999).
