Known for long from a single specimen, until a near-topotype (USNM 449080) was obtained in 1987 (Hoffmann, 1996a). Regarded as a subspecies of thibetanus by some authors (Dolgov and Hoffmann, 1977; Hoffmann, 1987, 1996a, b) or included in buchariensis by others (Corbet, 1978c; Gureev, 1979).
