Comments: Subgenus Otisorex; S. cinereus group (Demboski and Cook, 2003). Karyotype has 2n = 60, FN = 62. Formerly included in cinereus, but van Zyll de Jong (1976, 1991b) provided arguments for a specific destinction of ugyunak; genetically related to jacksoni, portenkoi, camtschatica, and pribilofensis (Demboski and Cook, 2003).
