Tanypodinae: Comments
Comment:
John Epler's comments on this name follow: Keiffer established the subfamily Tanypodinae in 1806, before Hendel's 1808 paper that uncovered the existence of the two Meigen papers (1800 and 1803) in which Meigen first described Tendipes and Pelopia. Meigen later (1803) called them Chironomus and Tanypus. After Hendel's paper, Kieffer then established the subfamily name Pelopiinae, replacing Tanypodinae in 1811. Opinion 678 of the ICZN suppressed the names from 1800 (Tendipes and Pelopia) and also recommended that the family, subfamily and tribe names be based on Meigen's 1803 work, not the 1800 paper. Hence the use of the subfamily Tanypodinae.
