Although Brisson (1762) is a rejected work, several names from it were conserved by via Opinion 1894 (1998). Without those conservations, the name Tapirus would have first been available from Brünnich (1771), and this authorship has been applied in a number of pre-1998 works. The name is now attributable solely to Brisson 1762 instead
