Comments: Subgenus Megascapheus. The taxonomic history of this, and related species has been contentious. Hall and Kelson (1959) included bottae within umbrinus but considered baileyi and townsendii as separate species, but Hall (1981) included all four of these taxa within his concept of umbrinus. Anderson (1966, 1972), Hoffmeister (1969, 1986), and Patton and co-workers (Patton, 1973; Patton and Dingman, 1968; Patton and Smith, 1981) considered bottae (including baileyi) separate from umbrinus.
