The Manchu Striped Maple is a small deciduous tree belonging to the soapberry family, indigenous to Asia and Russia. It typically grows to heights of 20 to 35 feet and can spread up to 25 feet wide. In the spring, it produces inconspicuous yellow-green flowers in racemes, which give way to winged samaras in the fall. The leaves, which are lobed, transform into a vibrant yellow during autumn. One of its most striking characteristics is its bark, which features a unique striped pattern of green and white, accented with blue-green highlights. Notably, this tree retains its distinctive bark longer into maturity compared to other snake-bark maples.
For optimal growth, plant this tree in well-drained soil that maintains moderate moisture, and position it in full sun or partial shade. It serves well as a shade tree for smaller gardens, as a focal point, and to provide visual interest during the winter months.
