Alstroemeria is commonly cultivated in greenhouses for cut flower production; however, certain species and hybrids, like A. ligtu, can survive the winter outdoors in North Carolina. To enhance their chances of survival, it is advisable to apply a generous layer of mulch during the winter months. This herbaceous perennial features upright stems and alternate, strap-shaped leaves that taper at the base. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, moist soil. The plant has fleshy, fibrous roots that can be divided in the fall. Alstroemeria is a favored choice for houseplants or as part of interior landscaping, and it can also be grown outdoors in flower gardens as a tender perennial.
In terms of pests and diseases, Alstroemeria may face challenges from spider mites, slugs, and snails that can damage its foliage.
