'Blue Ice' Bluestar is a herbaceous perennial characterized by its striking lavender-blue flowers, belonging to the dogbane family. While the exact lineage of this hybrid remains unclear, its foliage and blossoms closely resemble those of A. tabernaemontana. However, 'Blue Ice' distinguishes itself with a more compact growth habit and deeper blue flowers. The stems produce a toxic milky sap, which serves as a natural deterrent against damage from rabbits and deer.
During late spring to early summer, the stems are adorned with clusters of star-shaped blue blooms. The leaves maintain their appeal throughout the summer before transitioning to a vibrant yellow in the fall. This plant thrives in average, moist, yet well-drained soil and prefers full sun to partial shade. Once established, mature specimens exhibit a good level of drought tolerance. 'Blue Ice' can be effectively utilized as a border plant or grouped within perennial gardens or along woodland edges.
