Phonetic Spelling:as-KLEE-pee-as kur-a-SA-vih-ka

Genus:Asclepias

Species:curassavica

Family:Apocynaceae

Tropical Milkweed is a delicate, upright perennial that is frequently cultivated as an annual. It tends to become invasive in disturbed environments and is commonly found thriving in neglected areas, along roadsides, or in fields. The plant produces vibrant clusters of orange-red flowers atop its leaves and stems, which exude a milky sap when damaged. For optimal growth, it should be planted in full sunlight within moist, nutrient-rich, and well-drained soil. It can grow up to 4 feet tall and spread about 2 feet wide.

However, this species is not advisable for attracting Monarch Butterflies, as its blooming period may not align with the Monarchs' migration schedule, potentially leading to prolonged stays in one location that could negatively impact their populations. Instead, consider planting one of the native milkweed varieties.
