Phonetic Spelling:bud-LAY-yah al-ter-nih-FOH-lee-ah
Genus:Buddleja
Species:alternifolia
Family:Scrophulariaceae
The Alternate-leaf Butterfly Bush stands out from other Buddleja species due to its alternate leaf arrangement, as opposed to the typical opposite configuration. For optimal growth, it thrives in full sunlight, although it can survive in partial shade, albeit with fewer blooms. This plant is adaptable to various soil types, including dry and clay soils, but it favors well-drained, organic-rich soil and does not perform well in overly wet conditions. Its foliage has a medium to fine texture. Since it blooms on last year's growth, pruning should be minimal and only done lightly after flowering, ensuring that no more than one-third of the oldest stems are removed.
The Fountain Butterfly Bush features a graceful, arching silhouette reminiscent of a weeping willow. It can be cultivated as either a multi-stemmed shrub or a small tree with a single trunk. Like the Alternate-leaf variety, Buddleia alternifolia produces flowers on older wood, so any pruning should be restricted to minor adjustments as necessary.
