Family:Liliaceae

Calochortus is a genus of perennial, bulbous plants native to North America, encompassing approximately 70 species. This group includes mariposa lilies, characterized by their open, wedge-shaped petals; globe lilies, which feature round flowers; and star tulips, known for their upright, pointed petals. The flowers emerge on stems that grow from underground bulbs, typically blooming in late spring or early summer. Generally, these plants thrive in full morning sunlight while benefiting from some shade during the hotter afternoon hours. They prefer well-drained soil and exhibit a degree of cold hardiness, although they can suffer damage if temperatures drop below 28 degrees Fahrenheit. Usually, each stem produces one or more flowers, appearing in the spring or early summer.

For optimal growth, bulbs should be stored at temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit and planted at a depth of about 5 inches.
