Plant breeders at NC State University have been actively reimagining our native sweetshrub. Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Tom Ranney, gardeners in Carolina can now enjoy the stunning white-flowered hybrid known as 'Venus.' This variety is a cross between Calycanthus floridus (Carolina allspice), Calycanthus occidentalis (California sweetshrub), and Calycanthus chinensis.
Similar to the native deciduous sweetshrub, 'Venus' thrives in both full sun and partial shade. Its hybrid vigor allows it to flourish, requiring ample space to grow; in moist soil, it can achieve a height and width of up to 5 feet. The plant produces numerous ivory-hued flower buds that bloom into nearly pure white blossoms.
While sweetshrubs are not typically regarded as mainstream landscape choices, hybrids like 'Venus' are likely to gain popularity among gardeners. This resilient plant is resistant to deer damage and adapts well to clay soils. It can be featured as a standout specimen, incorporated into shrub borders, or planted in naturalized areas and patios, where its delightful floral fragrance can be appreciated. Additionally, it serves well in foundation plantings. Once you witness its blooms, you'll quickly see why it’s a true showstopper!
