Phonetic Spelling:kuh-TAL-puh oh-VAY-tuh

Genus:Catalpa

Species:ovata

Family:Bignoniaceae

The Chinese Catalpa is a small deciduous tree that originates from the forests of China. It has a tendency to self-seed and has established itself in various regions of the United States. When fully grown, it can serve as an appealing rounded shade tree; however, it often develops an irregular shape, and its large leaves may suffer damage as the growing season advances, diminishing their visual appeal. This tree is particularly well-suited for challenging low-lying wet areas or locations with poor soil conditions. It thrives in moist, loamy soil rich in organic matter and prefers full sun to partial shade.

Regarding pests, diseases, and other issues: there are no major concerns. However, caterpillars of the Catalpa sphinx moth can inflict considerable harm. Occasionally, problems such as mildew, twig blight, verticillium wilt, and leaf spots may arise. Additionally, leaves can become tattered and unsightly due to wind or hail damage.
