'Rubicon' is a variety of White Cypress that tends to be sensitive when grown outside its natural habitat, often leading to a shorter lifespan. However, in its native environment—specifically the wetlands and bogs of eastern North America—it flourishes. This cultivar was first identified in the 1960s by Humphrey J. Welch at the Tennessee Valley Nursery in Winchester, Tennessee.
This tree features a dense, columnar shape and boasts blue-green evergreen leaves in warmer months, which transform into a rich reddish-purple during colder seasons. It typically takes about a decade to reach full maturity, growing approximately 3 to 4 inches each year. 'Rubicon' can serve as an attractive winter interest in gardens and produces clusters of cones.
The species thrives in full sunlight and prefers peat-sandy soils that are medium to wet in moisture content.
In terms of pests and diseases, it faces few issues but is somewhat vulnerable to juniper blight, root rot, and bagworms.
