River Oats is a native grass that forms clumps and grows upright, featuring unique seed heads that resemble oats. This plant thrives in moist to wet, well-drained soils and can flourish in areas with partial sun to partial shade. It demonstrates a good tolerance for shade and has the potential to spread vigorously through rhizomes and seeds.
In spring, the tall stalks produce drooping seed heads that start off green, transition to tan in summer, and take on a purplish hue in the fall. These seed heads dance gracefully in even the lightest breeze. The bamboo-like leaves can turn a striking yellow-gold in the fall, provided they receive sufficient sunlight.
River Oats is ideal for use in naturalized settings, along stream banks, or at the edges of water gardens. This plant was honored as the 1994 NC Wildflower of the Year, a recognition facilitated by the North Carolina Botanical Garden with support from the Garden Club of North Carolina.
