Phonetic Spelling:klay-TOH-nee-uh vir-JIN-ih-kuh

Genus:Claytonia

Species:virginica

Family:Montiaceae

Spring beauty is a perennial plant native to the purslane family, commonly found in the damp woodlands of eastern Canada and the United States. This low-growing species features clusters of delicate light pink or white flowers adorned with dark pink stripes. The blossoms open in the sunlight and close during the night or on overcast days. Spring beauty propagates through underground tubers and seeds, making it suitable as a ground cover. However, it often fades away after seed production in late spring. The plant's leaves are grass-like, arranged in pairs at the base, and can reach lengths of up to 12 inches before entering dormancy. Additionally, spring beauty grows from corms that have a flavor reminiscent of chestnuts.

This plant thrives in partial shade and prefers moist, nutrient-rich soils with good drainage. It can be successfully integrated into meadows, woodlands, or even residential gardens, and is well-suited for rock gardens as well as native and wildflower gardens.
