Species:caroliniana

Family:Montiaceae

Carolina Spring Beauty is a wildflower indigenous to the region and classified as a spring ephemeral. These plants bloom and produce seeds rapidly before the trees above fully leaf out, after which they wither away once their seed capsules have matured. This species thrives in rich, partially shaded woodlands with moist soil, particularly in the mountainous areas of North Carolina.

The flowers, which range in color from pink to white, feature five petals adorned with darker stripes, creating a distinctive striped look. The plant, which can reach heights of 6 to 12 inches, grows from corms and exhibits either an upright or sprawling growth habit. Its tubers are edible, resembling potatoes in taste and texture.

However, it is often challenging to find this plant available for purchase.
