Phonetic Spelling:klay-OH-me hoot-AH-na
Genus:Cleome
Species:houtteana
Family:Cleomaceae
Cleome is a tall, somewhat spiky plant characterized by its delicate, spidery flowers that bloom in shades of pink, purple, and white. While it thrives in full sunlight, it can also adapt to light shade, provided it is planted in well-drained soil that maintains consistent moisture throughout the growing season. This plant makes a striking addition to the back of flower beds or along fences, especially when paired with shorter annuals in front to conceal its bare stems and offer support. Cleome is known to attract a variety of wildlife, including birds, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Although it readily self-seeds, it is not classified as invasive. Additionally, it is rarely affected by deer or rabbits. The plant emits a musky scent that some may find off-putting, and while it is appealing as a cut flower, its lifespan once cut is relatively brief.
