Phonetic Spelling:dik-TAM-nus AL-bus

Genus:Dictamnus

Species:albus

Family:Rutaceae

The Gas Plant is a slow-growing perennial that ultimately forms a dense, upright clump adorned with glossy green leaves that emit a pleasant fragrance. In early summer, it showcases striking spikes of delicate white flowers. On calm days, a match held beneath these spikes can ignite a release of methane gas. This plant does not respond well to transplantation, and once it is settled in, it should not be divided. To propagate new plants, sow seeds outdoors in the fall and allow them to undergo cold stratification over the winter. It may take 2 to 4 years for these plants to produce blooms. They thrive in moist, well-drained soils that are slightly alkaline but can withstand some drought once established. The Gas Plant flourishes best in regions with cooler summer nights.

It is important to note that the flowers and leaves may cause skin rashes in certain individuals.
