Southern Bush Honeysuckle is a resilient, low-growing deciduous shrub that flourishes in sunny, windy, and arid locations where many other plants struggle to survive. This species is indigenous to the Great Smoky Mountains and the southern Appalachian region. It propagates through suckers, often creating dense thickets, making it an excellent choice for bank stabilization or as ground cover in challenging environments. The shrub features dark green leaves accented with red veins and produces trumpet-shaped yellow flowers that bloom throughout the summer. It is drought-resistant, hardy, and adaptable to various soil types and pH levels, while also tolerating some shade. However, it does not fare well in salty conditions or poorly draining clay soils. To manage its size and remove any dead stems, pruning should be done in late winter or early spring.
