Phonetic Spelling:er-ih-THROH-nee-um um-bil-ih-KAY-tum
Genus:Erythronium
Species:umbilicatum
Family:Liliaceae
The Dimpled Trout Lily is a spring ephemeral native to moist bottomlands and sloped forests, as well as drier upland areas across North Carolina and the southeastern United States. In early spring, it showcases two fleshy, mottled leaves and a single stem that supports a solitary yellow flower resembling a lily. By summer, the plant withers away. It originates from a small, pointed white bulb that can multiply and create colonies. These bulbs tend to grow deep in the soil, making them challenging to extract without harming the plant.
This species thrives in woodland environments with moist, humus-rich soils and prefers partial to full shade. It is particularly well-suited for planting near waterways, such as ponds or streams.
