Swamp Doghobble is a deciduous shrub that typically grows between 3 to 6 feet tall, featuring alternate leaves. Its stems exhibit a striking combination of green and red hues. In the spring, it produces clusters of white, bell-shaped flowers that bloom on racemes measuring 3 to 4 inches in length. As autumn approaches, the leaves transform into vibrant shades of red.
This plant thrives in moist, cool, and acidic soil. While it can tolerate full sunlight, it requires consistent moisture to flourish. It is sensitive to drought and strong winds. Although it is winter hardy in Zone 5, it is advisable to plant it in a sheltered spot and provide adequate winter mulch in colder regions. In milder climates, it may retain its leaves year-round.
Characterized by its twiggy, spreading growth habit, Swamp Doghobble produces suckers that help it form colonies. While it generally faces few issues with pests or diseases, it can be vulnerable to root rot and leaf spot.
