Pinebarren Gentian is a wildflower native to the eastern United States, ranging from New Jersey down to Georgia. In North Carolina, it thrives in the coastal plain and sandhills, particularly within longleaf pine savannas, pine flatwoods, and various environments of pine barrens, adapting to conditions that can be either moist or dry. This plant showcases striking blue flowers from September to December, blooming on stems that reach about one foot in height and are oriented upwards. It is classified as endangered in several states.
This species favors moist, somewhat nutrient-poor soils and typically grows best in partial shade, although it can also tolerate drier environments and full sunlight. Due to its specific growing requirements, it may pose challenges for inexperienced gardeners. It is best suited for planting at the edges of bogs or ponds, or even in containers, but care should be taken to avoid excessive fertilization.
