  • Photo of Gloriosa (Gloriosas)

Phonetic Spelling:glo-ree-OH-sah

Genus:Gloriosa

Species:

Family:Colchicaceae

Plant tubers should be positioned horizontally at a depth of 2 to 4 inches and spaced 8 to 12 inches apart. This plant thrives in well-drained soil and features delicate trailing stems that can reach heights of up to 6 feet. In Zone 8, Gloriosa can survive the winter if adequately mulched. While it can grow in sandy soil enriched with compost, it does not tolerate salt well. When planted alone, this vine may appear weak or sparse, so it is advisable to pair it with another vine on a trellis or similar support structure.

It is important to note that all parts of the plant are toxic, particularly the tubers, which resemble yams. Ingesting any part of this plant can be extremely dangerous and potentially fatal.

Common pests and diseases affecting this plant include aphids, anthracnose, various viruses, and bulb rot.
