Phonetic Spelling:glo-ree-OH-sah soo-PER-bah

Genus:Gloriosa

Species:superba

Family:Colchicaceae

Gloriosa superba is a delicate, herbaceous climbing plant that originates from a robust tuberous root. Its leaves can be found either alternating or opposite each other, characterized by their simple, strap-like shape and tendril-like tips. The flowers, which bloom on elongated stalks, feature six petals and come in vibrant shades of yellow or red, adorned with wavy edges. For optimal growth, it is advisable to support this vine with a trellis; however, excessive handling of the stems during training can lead to damage.

All parts of the plant are toxic, with the tubers—thickened roots that bear a resemblance to yams—being particularly dangerous. Ingesting any part of this plant can be highly toxic and potentially lethal.
