Genus:Ilex

Species:decidua

Family:Aquifoliaceae

Ilex decidua, commonly known as possumhaw, is a deciduous holly species. It thrives in various habitats, including limestone glades, bluffs, wet woodlands along streams, and lowland areas such as sloughs and swamps. This plant typically grows as an upright shrub or small tree, reaching heights of 7 to 15 feet in cultivated settings, and can reach up to 30 feet in its natural environment. The bark is smooth and gray-brown, often featuring small warts. The fruit of the possumhaw attracts a range of wildlife, including birds, deer, and various small mammals, notably opossums, which is reflected in its common name.

Most possumhaw plants are dioecious, meaning they have distinct male and female individuals, although some possess perfect flowers that contain both stamens and pistils. To ensure a good berry yield, it is advisable to plant female specimens alongside at least one male for effective pollination. Pruning should be done in early spring, just before the onset of new growth, to maintain the desired shape.

Dioecious plants require a male pollinator for female fruit production.

Fire Risk: This species has a low flammability rating.

Insects, Diseases, or Other Plant Issues: Possumhaw holly may occasionally face challenges such as leaf spots and powdery mildew.
