Genus:Indigofera
Species:amblyantha
Family:Fabaceae
Known scientifically as Indigofera, or simply indigo, this deciduous shrub thrives along streams and in woodlands across its native region of south-central China. It prefers average, well-drained soils that are neutral to slightly alkaline and maintains a medium level of moisture. Once established, it demonstrates resilience to sun, heat, and drought; however, in hot and humid conditions, it benefits from some afternoon shade. Additionally, harsh winters can cause damage to the tips of its branches. Since it blooms on new growth, the optimal time for pruning is early spring or late winter, ideally cutting back to the ground or to healthy growth.
This shrub typically reaches a height and width of 4 to 6 feet, featuring grey-green leaves composed of 4 to 6-inch pinnate leaflets, although its fall foliage lacks notable color. The flowering period extends from May through September, showcasing pea-shaped blossoms that range in color from pink to rose to lilac. These flowers are arranged in narrow racemes measuring 2 to 5 inches, which eventually give way to dark purple seed pods.
