This genus comprises 120 species of flowering plants commonly referred to as sea-lavender, statice, caspia, or marsh-rosemary, and belongs to the plumbago or leadwort family. These plants are distributed across North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
Among them, L. carolinianum, known as Carolina Sea Lavender, is indigenous to the eastern coastal regions of the United States.
