Water Purslane is a low-growing plant from the primrose family that thrives in wet environments. It typically flourishes in shallow waters near small ponds or streams, as well as in muddy areas, and is also popular in aquarium settings. The plant features succulent stems that are often tinged with red, and it produces subtle flowers from mid-summer to fall.
This species can be found near ponds or cultivated in rain gardens and water features. When it grows in muddy conditions, Water Purslane tends to spread along the ground, with only the tips of its branches standing upright. In aquatic settings, its branches reach upward, with just the tips remaining above the water's surface. Whether submerged or on land, the plant continuously develops roots at its nodes, creating dense mats. While it can be considered invasive, Water Purslane also plays a beneficial role in stabilizing muddy banks and is effective in filtering toxins in bioswales and drainage ditches.
