Phonetic Spelling:MAY-lus doh-MESS-tik-a
Genus:Malus
Species:domestica
Family:Rosaceae
The Empire apple tree is a semi-dwarf variety resulting from the crossbreeding of McIntosh and Red Delicious apples, leaning more towards the characteristics of McIntosh. This tree can reach a height of up to 15 feet with a similar spread, making it an excellent choice for smaller gardens compared to standard apple trees, which can grow between 18 to 25 feet tall.
To ensure proper pollination, semi-dwarf or dwarf apple trees like the Empire require another apple variety nearby. Suitable pollinators include Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Gala, or a crabapple that blooms around the same time.
These trees thrive in slightly enriched, loamy soil that retains moisture while allowing for good drainage, ideally with a pH level between 6.0 and 6.5.
Like many apple trees, the Empire is vulnerable to diseases such as Scab and Powdery Mildew, as well as pests like aphids. To mitigate the risk of fungal issues, it’s advisable to plant the tree in full sunlight and avoid excessive fertilization during late summer. For localized treatment options, consult your county's Cooperative Extension office.
