The Mutsu apple, also known as Crispin, is a hybrid variety derived from Golden Delicious and Indo apples, originally brought over from Japan. This triploid cultivar is self-sterile and does not effectively pollinate other apple trees. Suitable pollinators include Golden Delicious, Jonathon, and Red Rome.
Harvested in late September through October, the Mutsu apple is ideal for fresh consumption, salads, and various baking or cooking applications. It can be stored for several months in a cool crisper, maintaining its quality.
This apple tree thrives in average to loamy soil but shows improved yields in nutrient-rich environments. It prefers slightly acidic soil with a pH level between 5.0 and 6.8.
For optimal fruit production, the tree requires full sunlight and good air circulation around its branches. It is advisable to avoid planting it near taller trees or structures that could cast shade for part of the day. In essence, ensuring adequate sunlight, air movement, and well-drained soil contributes to a robust and fruitful tree, which is better equipped to fend off diseases and pests.
However, this cultivar is particularly vulnerable to Blister Spot.
